Why Do Roofs Deteriorate Over Time?

Your roof is meant to protect your home from the elements, so gradual wear is to be expected. In today’s post, the roofing contractors at Barnett Roofing discuss the common causes of roofing wear, and how they lead to eventual roof replacement.

Solar Radiation

The sun emits many kinds of electromagnetic radiation, and what we perceive as sunlight is but a small part of it. Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared radiation are two types of invisible radiation that are known to cause roofing wear. While both types of radiation have practical uses—UV radiation is used in sterilization technologies while infrared is used in microwave ovens—they’re not good news for asphalt shingles.

Exposure to UV and infrared radiation can result in roofing deterioration. UV rays allow free oxygen molecules to mix with the hydrocarbons in asphalt shingles. While the process is slow, the effects become apparent over the years: the oils that hold the asphalt molecules begin to break down, which continuously degrades the roofing surface. The heat produced by infrared radiation accelerates the process.

This is why asphalt shingles are covered with a layer of granules. While also providing color and texture, their main purpose is to shield the asphalt-soaked backing layer from exposure to solar radiation. Call for roof repair if the shingles appear to be “balding.” Prolonging this condition can lead to accelerated wear.

Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Asphalt shingles undergo expansion and contraction from outdoor temperature changes. While other components like flashing and fasteners also undergo thermal expansion and contraction, they don’t do so at the same rate. Under extreme temperatures, these differences can cause increased strain on some parts of the roof, resulting in sections getting worn out.

Lack of Maintenance

Things like solar radiation and thermal expansion can’t be stopped. However, keeping up with maintenance lets your roofing contractor spot early signs of wear, including the ones described above, and perform repairs before they get worse. Keeping up with scheduled roofing maintenance has additional benefits, including keeping your roofing warranty coverage valid.
