What Is a Roofing Fascia?

Whenever people talk about the parts of the roof, they often think about the shingles and the flashing. However, a roofing system is actually composed of many parts, each as important as the next one. Today, the leading roof repair experts in the area talk about one of these components: the fascia.

What Is Fascia?

The fascia is a long strip of water-resistant material that runs along the edges of the roof. While the fascia is commonly made of treated wood, metal and vinyl fascias are also popularly used in homes. In order to match the rest of the roof, the fascia usually has the same colors as the trim and flashing.

Protecting the Sides

The roof’s shingles and siding are designed to keep harsh weather elements such as rain, snow and wind out of the house. However, they can’t provide protection against factors coming from the side of the roof. Roofing contractors install the fascia to cover the vulnerable sides of the roof. For roofs with overhangs, the fascia works together with the soffit panels to keep the roof’s underside protected.

An Anchor Point for Gutters

Another important purpose of the fascia is that it is designed to serve as an anchor point for the gutter sections. This means that the fascia must be strong enough to handle the weight of the gutter and all the water it can hold during very rainy days.

Professional Installation Required

Installing a fascia takes more than just bolting down a strip of material along the side of the roof. There are careful considerations that require the right set of skills and tools to make sure that your fascia doesn’t get compromised by installation mistakes. That said, you should avoid taking the DIY approach and hire a roof replacement company to handle the job.
