Roofing Do’s and Don’ts: Storm Damage

Any responsible homeowner would want to inspect their roof the first chance they can after a storm passes their area. They’re anxious to see if their roofing system has sustained significant damage or if it has affected any other parts of their home. It’s a good thing to have a proactive mindset when approaching storm damage, but one should do so in a safe manner. In today’s post, the local roofing contractors, Barnett Roofing, explains the do’s and don’ts after a storm passes your area.

Don’t Climb Up Your Roof

Most homeowners are worried about their roof’s condition after a storm hits. Granted, it’s one of the easiest ways to assess your roof’s condition, but it’s also one of the most dangerous. After all, you aren’t sure of your roof’s condition so it’s dangerous to walk over it. Aside from the slippery surfaces, the roof may not be able to hold your weight which could lead to a roof collapse that would endanger yourself and your family. Have your roofing professionals handle the inspection to be safe.

Do Have Your Roof Repaired and Inspected

If you need a roof repair or replacement, be sure to leave it to the professionals in your area. Before the rainy season even starts, it’s a great idea to have your roof inspected to see if it can weather the storm and make any preparations if needed. It’s also a great opportunity to spot issues early on before they worsen. Don’t consider relying on DIY repairs as these could worsen your roof’s condition and even compromise your safety. Remember not to hold off roof repair and replacements as well since it can cause bigger problems in the long run if left unattended.

Do Contact Your Insurance Provider

If you notice that there are leaks in your home or any other kind of damage, don’t hesitate to call your insurance provider and roofing contractor immediately. Try to make some temporary repairs to mitigate the damage. Leaving roofing damage alone will put your coverage at risk since you didn’t take any action to reduce the damage. After you’ve prepared and documented everything, submit all the requirements to your insurance provider, and wait for their instructions.
