How to Properly Navigate Your Claims Process

When a storm damages your home’s roof, you immediately proceed to clean up and call for an emergency roof repair. But you need to remember to account all the damage for your insurance company when you file your claim. This also means taking pictures of the losses before removing the debris. If possible, save the damaged items so it can be inspected by your insurer. Also make sure to mitigate any further damage to your home and make temporary repairs when you can, such as covering holes or boarding windows. Doing all this may be a bit tedious, but necessary. These are only the first steps in making sure your roof will be reimbursed for damages.

As You Start Your Claim

Most insurance companies have a time requirement for reporting a claim, so you need to call your agent as soon as possible. If you’re unable to contact your insurance company, you can go to your state insurance department so they can help you find contact information for your company. Most insurers also send response teams to disaster areas, and can help you determine what damage is covered. They can help start your claim and even issue a check to start the recovery process.

When you’re reporting for losses, you’ll need insurance information, current contact information and a home inventory or list of damaged and lost property. If you don’t have a home inventory, begin making a list of lost items as you go and check each of your home’s rooms. Make sure to include as much detail as possible.

The Claims Process

After you report your damages to your insurer, they’ll send a claims adjuster to assess the losses and estimate your damaged roof repair at no cost. Public adjusters offer the same services, but you may have to cover for any related fees. An adjuster will walk through your home to inspect damaged items and temporary repairs. During the inspection, they’ll look at the outside of your home, your roof or your basement. Afterwards, they’ll provide documentation of the losses to your insurer to determine your claims settlement. When you’re getting paid for your losses, you may receive more than one check. The first will likely be an emergency advance, while other payments will be for the contents of your home and other personal property.

Be Cautious of Home Fraud

Home repair fraud is common after a natural disaster. Shady contractors often come into affected regions looking to make quick money by taking advantage of victims. Be sure to avoid aggressive contractors and their demands for up-front repair payment. Don’t pay cash or write a check before services are rendered; you don’t have to feel pressured by any contractor who wants you to sign a contract immediately. Wait until the repair work is complete to issue final payment.

Most homeowners prefer to do business with local or trusted roofing companies. You can ask your friends, family and even your insurer for references. They’ll usually recommend a few that they can trust. So, whether it’s roofing repair or shingle roof replacement, hire the only contractors you can count on. Call Barnett Roofing at (865) 936-6959.
