The Different Types of Flashing

• Sheet metal – Sheet metal is made from  steel, zinc and aluminum alloys and is the most widely used material for flashing

• Aluminum – Another popular option is aluminum flashing. Aluminum is durable and cost-effective but isn’t suited for all homes. For instance, contractors don’t recommend installing aluminum flashing on homes with concrete and fiber-cement siding because alkaline components in cement and fiber cement siding can degrade the aluminum. Copper-rich preservatives, which are used in certain kinds of lumber, can also corrode aluminum.

• Lead – This type of flashing is normally used to cover gaps between chimneys and roofing panels.

• Copper and lead-copper – Copper and lead-copper flashing are the most expensive option, but they’re also the most durable. Unlike aluminum, copper and lead-copper aren’t vulnerable to wood preservatives. Thanks to copper’s aesthetic appeal, this type of flashing is often used in historic homes. However, copper and lead-copper flashing aren’t without their disadvantages. For one thing, they’re harder to mold than the aforementioned three.
