Granule Loss on Your Roof: Should You Be Worried?

When properly cared for and maintained, asphalt shingle roofs can be very durable and long-lasting, with a service life of 20 to 25 years. You can count on this roofing material to effectively defend your home from the elements such as sunshine, wind, rain and snow. However, the granules on your shingles will start shedding at some point.

In this post, Barnett Roofing, one of the area’s top roofing contractors, shares more information about shingle granule loss.

Granule Loss Is Unavoidable

During the manufacturing process, excess granules are placed on the shingles. As the shingles are being packed and handled, some of the extra granules will come loose. Since this is a normal occurrence, you can be assured that your new shingles aren’t damaged or subpar.

Nevertheless, it’s important to note that the granules of asphalt shingles will lose adhesion over time. The shingle’s adhesive characteristics typically deteriorate as the roof ages, causing granules to be shed. In other cases, granule loss is caused by hail, wind, rain, heavy foot traffic and various other circumstances. Consult roof repair experts and have them inspect your roof to figure out the exact cause of shingle granule loss.

Granule Loss Due to Severe Weather

Granule loss can occur due to severe weather, so be aware that weather events can knock your shingle granules loose. Although the granules are strong and will remain attached to your shingles in most situations, hail, tornadoes or hurricanes can loosen or completely dislodge the granules due to sheer force. When this happens, there’s not much you can do except have experts fix your roof.
